Do you think that people should read and be aware of global/national news?
The average person should, I believe, should try to read as much news as they can and educate themselves on the world around them. I don't think names and specific details matter when reading news, because news is about how stories affect people and make them feel. If we don't know what is happening in the world around us, then it is difficult for us as individuals to form our own opinions on topics, and be productive in a conversation on said issues. This, however, depends on whether or not they have a general interest in news, and in having these conversations with others, and I think that if someone never feels a particular desire to be aware of what's happening in other parts of the world, then that's okay too.

Yeah.Today the three articles I read are as follows:
1.This article, from GMA, is on a gym teacher who stopped during class to help one of his students fix her ponytail. The act was recorded and ended up going viral online, much to the teacher's surprise. This story matters to me, because I appreciate how small acts of kindness receive so much praise on social media, it's very wholesome. 2. This article, from the BBC, is on Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, who admitted to taking part in blackface in his younger years. In an interview with African-American Gayle King, he referenced to slaves as "indentured servants", saying a historian told him that it was a more accurate term than "slaves". This article is important to me, because I think that issues with racism and oppression are very much still an issue that has been contributed to by people in positions of power today. 3. This article, from USA Today, is on a boy in Ohio who went against his parents wishes, and educated himself on what vaccines are, and came to a conclusion that they are "good and beneficial", in his words. He sought out help and advice on Reddit as to whether he was old enough to get vaccines himself, and after turning 18, he got vaccinated for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, and HPV. This story is important to me, because as more and more parents decide to not vaccinate their children, more and more children are put in danger of being killed by disease and virus outbreaks. This article shows that kids nowadays are going to great lengths to educate themselves on the world around them, which is pretty good. |
